If you ask children what they like doing nowadays, almost all of them will say they love their video games and television. This is not a problem unless it is to extreme and the children do not do anything else, which is unfortunately the case. There are more overweight and obese children today then ever before and the trend is continuing along this path with the number of 20% of children overweight and on the rise. Not only does this extra weight cause health problems, like diabetes, but it will keep them from being active for the rest of their lives since they are in no condition to do even simple things like climb stairs or walk a couple of miles. Fitness for children is more important now than it has ever been and it is up to parents, schools and communities to develop fitness schedules for children.
Many children don’t even know how much fun fitness activities can be, because they are always in front of the TV, playing video games or surfing the internet. Going outside or participating in sports is no longer a priority, but that can easily change if the child is exposed to something that appeals to them. There are many places for children to get involved actively in fitness programs, such as at gyms or local sports clubs. They can then try out all that is offered in order to find out what they like the most. Having fun is important when it comes to fitness for children, since they generally don’t grasp how important being fit is for them and their health.
Those that do not have money for clubs and gyms or who live in cities without much space to play in can still help their children and provide fitness activities. Much of the fitness equipment is not expensive, like trampolines or jump ropes. For aerobic programs you can even do that in your living room so there is always something for everyone to do. Many schools also offer extracurricular activities that are free to take advantage of, so have your child try out and participate in these. There should be no excuses, since a wide range of activities are offered, like basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, dancing and even wrestling. Some clubs, like the YMCA, also offer free or very affordable fitness options for children and adults, so maybe going as a family will help support and get the child active.
Fitness should be an essential part of your daily routine for a number of reasons. The benefits of participating regularly in fitness activities are many, such as it simply helps you to feel better, it can be a way of relieving stress, helps you to maintain or reduce your weight and it keeps you healthy. Especially your heart can benefit from targeted cardio training and you will reduce your risk of having a heart attack or suffering from heart disease. Although fitness is so important, unfortunately too many people don’t take advantage of any kind of fitness training and if asked why they don’t, the majority will tell you that they don’t have enough time.
